Good Trouble Lives On Community Event (not a protest)

  • Clear Lake Elementary School 4646 Barger Drive Eugene, OR, 97402 United States (map)

Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people.

On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, we’re taking action across the country to defend our democracy and carry forward his legacy of Good Trouble.

In Lane County, one of the organizations making Good Trouble is the NAACP. The NAACP hosts several youth programs empowering students to build confidence; learn positive aspects of African American Art, History, and Culture; grow collective community pride; connect with mentors; and lead and serve in their communities. On July 17th, President Demond Hawkins will host a press conference at 11am open also to the public at the new Clear Lake Community Center, the new home of NAACP, and several other community organizations serving youth and families, hosted by the Bethel School District in the former site of Clear Lake Elementary School.

The Clear Lake Community Center was impacted by federal cuts that eliminated funding meant to develop the site into a full scale Resilience Hub, to aid community members during environmental and climate disasters, such as floods, fires, earthquakes and other events we've seen recently in our community. This loss, as well as the recent move, challenge our community to create our own local solutions when the federal government fails us. So, the Good Trouble Day planning committee, including Indivisible, Showing Up for Racial Justice, the Good Trouble Library, 50501 Eugene and 350Eugene, will be kicking off a Good Trouble Fundraiser for the NAACP and Book Drive to collect books by Black and other authors of color to create a Good Trouble Library for school age kids within the Clear Lake Community Center!

On July 17th, you are invited to the press conference, but more important, you will receive information about the books we are collecting and how to support our local NAACP, and even MORE important, how you can spread the word to your friends and family about the amazing new community center at Clear Lake and how they can build our community resilience by investing in books and making a contribution to our local NAACP.

Please note: This is not a protest or rally, and it will be held during business hours where children are served, so we will not be chanting or waving signs. This is a great chance to listen and learn from the NAACP and get to see a sneak preview of the new community center.
