LANE COUNTY DEMOCRATS JOIN
THE CELEBRATION
The
Democratic Party of Lane County was well-represented in the opening event of the
2005 Eugene Celebration. Democrats came out in great numbers for Saturday
morning's Celebration Parade. Despite graying skies, the parade route was lined
with thousands of spectators that cheered the passing progressives.
Congressman Peter Defazio led the contingent of Lane County elected officials
in his role of official "Slime Scooper," following behind the parade mascot, a
forty-foot giant slug. Given the job, nobody followed too closely on the
congressman's heels. "Not much different than what I have to deal with
almost every day
on Capitol Hill," he quipped.

MORE THAN 1000 RALLY FOR
PEACE IN EUGENE
At the largest Peace rally in Eugene since the Vietnam war, more than a
thousand marchers paraded through downtown on Saturday, then gathered for an
hour-long presentation on the steps of the Federal Building.
Master
of Ceremonies Marion
Malcolm led the event, which included half a dozen speakers, peace songs and
a letter from Oregon Congressman Peter Defazio. "it is time, no it is past
time," wrote Defazio, "for our young men and women to come home from this
war."
For more than an hour, the audience applauded and chanted as speaker after
speaker denounced the war in Iraq. The speaking roster included Brian
Bogart, Tim Jones, Carmen Urbina, Dan Goldrich, and Dean Mordhurst. The only
time when the enthusiastic crowd fell silent was when Malcolm asked them to
pause, "For a moment of silence, to remember those who have been
injured and lost their lives in this war."

DPLC ENDORSES PRIMARY
CAMPAIGN FAIRNESS

At
September's monthly membership meeting, the Democratic Party
of Lane County went on record in favor of fairness and equal treatment of
all Democratic Primary candidates in statewide races.
By more
than a two-thirds vote, the Party passed a resolution introduced by Public Relations
Chair Ron Burley, endorsing equal access for all declared and
legally qualified candidates in any statewide candidate forum.
The resolution will be
forwarded to the state Democratic Party of Oregon for their consideration.
Concurrent with the resolution, State Democratic Chair Jim Edmunson announced
that the DPO is discussing a major new
forum where all statewide candidates will have an opportunity to "make their
case" to Democratic voters in Oregon.

PROGRESSIVE COMMUNITY
RESPONDS TO HATEFUL AD

When Hallie Edwards opened her paper one day in July, she couldn't
believe what she saw, a half-page ad against the proposed Civil Unions Bill
SB1000. But this was more than just an ad, it was "a hateful,
bigoted lie," Hallie said.
The ad showed a husband, wife and two kids. It claimed their marriage would be
harmed if civil unions were ever approved in Oregon. It also claimed that
voters in the last election showed their opposition to civil unions with the
passage of Measure 36, even though that constitutional amendment never mentioned
civil unions. The ad went further, making a half-dozen outrageous and
hateful statements about gays, equality and tolerance.

OREGON DEMS LAUNCH "QUESTION
ROBERTS" RADIO CAMPAIGN
The
Democratic Party of Oregon recently launched a statewide radio campaign calling
on the US Senate to vigorously question Judge Roberts’ record in previous
Republican administrations, and questioning the credibility of the Bush
White House. To date, the Bush Administration has refused to
release critical documents about Judge Roberts’ political past.
Given the precedent the
Administration's actions in Iraq and the failure to respond adequately to
Hurricane Katrina, the American people should not simply take George Bush's
word that Roberts should ascend to Chief Justice. All documents that do not
impair national security should be released and Roberts must prove he is
committed to defending the rights of all Americans. More...
MAKE A
HURRICANE KATRINA CARE KIT
|
Democratic party organizations and other groups are working to ease the hardship
of the victims of Hurricane Katrina by creating special "Care
KIts" which will be sent to evacuees around the nation.
Basic
comfort is the least we can
provide for our fellow Americans, displaced by the worst natural disaster in our
nation's history.
It is essential that we act quickly. Three categories of Care Kits are needed,
for basic, infants, and children. The ideal contribution would be 3 Basic boxes,
1 Baby box, and 1 Child box.
