LANE COUNTY DEMOCRATS JOIN THE
CELEBRATION
The Democratic
Party of Lane County was well-represented in the opening event of the 2005
Eugene Celebration. Democrats came out in great numbers for Saturday
morning's Celebration Parade.
Despite graying skies, the parade route was lined with thousands of spectators
that cheered the passing progressives.
Congressman Peter Defazio led the contingent of Lane County elected officials
in his role of official "Slime Scooper," following behind the parade mascot, a
forty-foot giant slug. Given the job, nobody followed too close on the
congressman's heels. "Not much different than what I have to deal with
almost every day
on Capitol Hill," he quipped.
Lane County Commissioner Pete Sorenson
and State Representative Phil Barnhart marched the 20-block route that
snaked north on Oak Street, west on 8th, turned the corner on Charnelton and then
headed back east on West 11th. State Senator Floyd Prozanski
and District 8 successor, Paul Holvey guarded the rear of the delegation.
The theme of this year's DPLC float was "Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair,"
a reference to the shared Democratic desire to see George W. Bush removed from
the White House. Many of the DPLC contingent wore bubble-wrap faux shampoo and
carried "Rid-X" shampoo signs. Others dressed in "island" garb reminiscent of the 1940's. PCP Ron Craig drove
the truck which pulled the float while the famous advertising tune played from
loudspeakers. DPLC Fundraising Chair Amy Gibson was among the "beauties"
riding and waving from the float.
DPLC Community Action Chair
Barbara Rose organized the party's participation in the event. The Democratic
Party of Lane County has been part of the Eugene Celebration Parade and festival
for more than two decades.
The Eugene Celebration continues through the weekend. Please stop by the DPLC
information booth near the west side of the Saturday Market site on South Park
Street near West Coast bank (Booth #49). Booth hours are 9AM to 7PM on
Saturday, 10:30AM to 5PM on Sunday.
