At 6:00 p.m., the Demo-Forum convened, and John Attig spoke about a proposed commemoration for U.S. Nobel Peace Prize winners in Eugene. He is raising funds for the project. Then Pete Sorenson, Lane County Commissioner, explained why he has decided to run as a candidate for Oregon Governor in the May 2006 primary election. Val Hoyle, DPLC Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. and asked for announcements. Announcements Bruce Miller informed us that Mayor Kitty Piercy would be on 1450 KOPT, a talk radio show, tomorrow between 8:00 and 9: a.m. Three women are moderators on that station between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. each day. Bruce asked us to call and thank Kitty for her help in settling the bus strike. Annette Woodmark stated that a Speakout on affordable healthcare will be held at EWEB on Friday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. Barbara Lowry announced the Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) would sponsor House Parties on the topic of Social Security on April 5. Rick Grosscup added that the speaker will be John Edwards. Sign up at www.partytowin/DPO. NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon will be holding a benefit luncheon on April 4 at the Hilton from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The DPLC was invited to purchase a table or individual tickets for the event. Mayor Kitty Piercy will be the Keynote Speaker. David Monk with the Oregon Toxic Alliance informed us about SB 527, which would revamp how power plants are sited. Brooke Robertshaw emphasized the work CALC is doing to Stop Hate as hate language is occurring more frequently. The Eugene Human Rights Commission would appreciate receiving information about hate propaganda that is distributed. Kathy Ging invited us to a St. Patrick’s Celebration at 990 Jefferson after this meeting. There is an interesting U.S. map in the most recent Oregon Quarterly magazine that illustrates the voting pattern by Democrats and Republicans across the nation, county by county. Larry Wikander announced the House District (HD) 8 meeting on March 24 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at SEIU. Nadia Sindi has filed as a candidate for a position on the 4J School Board. Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) Becky Gladstone reported on HB 13 and HB 390 on voting machines. Public hearings are being held around the state. Peter Courtney’s web page has a listing of the hearings being held for Senate Committees. The House is controlled by Republicans, and they do not have a listing that the public can access. House Joint Revenue bill 14 would get rid of the double majority requirement at elections on taxation issues. Becky will give contact names, phone numbers, and web addresses about all these bills. Committee Reports Organization - John Cummens stated that the Organization Committee meets every other month prior to the Executive Committee (EC) meeting and is cooperating with Campaign Services. The districts are getting organized with precinct captains and sub-captains. HD 13 had a great meeting. Articles and announcements about HD meetings will be in the Outspoken. PCP packets are being prepared with ‘how to’ information, questionnaire about issues of concern and ways to participate. The new nominations for PCP are as follows:
Nominees from the last CC meeting were listed as follows: Gwendolyn P. Curran, Kristina A. Edmunson, Beverly A. Ficek, George W. Grier, Donald J. Hanson, Jason L. Owens, Cortnie A. Shupe, Elizabeth L. Uchytil, Al King. A motion was seconded and carried (MSC) to appoint these nominees as PCPs. Fundraising - Amy Gibson introduced Mark Cherniak and Mike Bonner as members of the Committee. Their emphasis will be on major donors and the development of a computer database to carefully track donors. Amy has 10 donated DVD copies of Outfoxed for sale at $10 each with funds to go in the DPLC treasury. A PCP will be working with House Parties to hold wine tastings as fundraisers. Mark noted that our goal is to raise $100,000 this year, and to start by circulating donation envelopes at this meeting to collect fund that will be used to underwrite the costs of a fundraising letter. Information Systems - Val reported that the committee is working with Kit Larson and Jeff Lewis. The Outspoken is in PDF format on the web. There are list serves for the committees, and you may participate by asking to be listed with the committee(s) you belong to. A full listing of PCP e-mail addresses is in development. About $2,000 is needed to provide critical communications infrastructure, and the e-mail information needs to be cleaned up. It will be at least 3 months before funds from the DPO are available. Campaign Services - Sara Chieffo, Chair, and Jared Mason-Gere, Vice-Chair, checked with Lane County Elections and found that almost every position has a candidate running, however, they are not all Dems. Watch the DPLC website and the Outspoken for a list of Democrats in the running. Sara stated that a letter and a follow-up call will be made to candidates to determine what they need in the way of support. Campaign Services needs volunteers to make these phone calls. Chris Matson will lead a training on March 26 on How to Run a Campaign on a Shoestring. Time and location are to be announced. Al King and John Light are running for the Springfield School Board and are supported by the Teacher’s Union. Stu Adler reported that he is a member of the DPLC Campaign Services and the DPO Campaign Services Committees. Some funds may be forthcoming from the DPO and the Democratic National Committee. Platform and Resolutions - George Grier (Chair) and Dave Skillman (VC) stated that HD Chairs have draft copies of DPLC core values that emerged from the retreat. We will use this document to frame our communications and as we conduct our work on the DPLC Platform at the end of the year. MSC with one vote in opposition to accept this resolution. Outspoken - Val commended Laura Gillpatrick for the great job in publishing the DPLC newsletter. Laura asked for corrections of phone and e-mail information and for letters to the editor. Deadline for the Outspoken each month is the Monday after the CC meeting. Subscriptions are $12 annually. Budget - Mike Arnold presented a budget proposal worked up with the other Committee members Rick Grosscup and Cj Mann. The EC reviewed this budget and recommends its adoption. MSC to approve the budget. Old Business MSC to approve the minutes of the February 17 CC meeting. Announcement - Aria Seligman announced that she is running for 4J School Board District position 6. She explained her position on school choice, nonviolence curriculum, and sex education. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
