CAMPAIGNS REACH
GET-OUT-THE-VOTE PHASE OF THE PRIMARY!
Oregon voters should have received their ballots, if they haven't already. They will then have until May 20th to make their final decisions about who they believe will best represent them in local, state, and national government.
The County must receive completed ballots by no later than 8 pm on May 20th. Voters who are in line by 8 pm, will be allowed to vote. Starting on May 15th, ballots should be delivered to one of the designated drop-off sites that are listed in the Voter's Pamphlet.
If voters switched their party affiliation within two weeks of the voter's registration deadline, they may receive the ballot of their former party initially, followed by the ballot from the new party. Ideally, they will only fill out their new ballot. But even if they fill out the initial ballot and send it in, they can still vote in the Democratic Primary with the second ballot.
Because they are no longer a member of their former party, the state's centralized database will catch the error automatically (the ballot envelope bar code contains the voter's ID and ballot style), and that ballot will not be processed. Instead, it will be set aside until all other ballots are processed. If the second, updated ballot is cast, only that one will be counted, and the old one will not be counted. If the voter sends in only the out-of-date ballot, only their votes in non-partisan contests will be counted. Again, under all circumstances, only one ballot will be counted per voter.
The U.S. postal service has been notified by Lane County Elections to deliver all ballots to Lane County Elections that include a First class postage stamp, regardless of postal rate increases or ballot weight differences. Lane County Elections has agreed to pay the difference for this specific election to ensure that voters’ ballots are not returned for insufficient postage.
Lane County voters have historically returned more than half their ballots at one of the many official ballot drop sites available throughout Lane County which are listed on their website: www.co.lane.or.us/Elections/DropOff.htm
If you have any questions call Lane County Elections at (541) 682-4234. Office hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. On Election Day, May 20 the office will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.

Democrats Help McCain with Voter's Pamphlet Statement!
For the first time in modern Oregon state politics, a presidential candidate has failed to supply a statement for the Oregon Voter's Pamphlet.
With Oregonians starting to fill out their ballots for this crucial Presidential Primary, the Democratic Party of Oregon decided to cross party lines and provide state voters a valuable service by sending out a statement on behalf of Republican candidate Senator John McCain (R-AZ).
Oregon Democrats understand that is important for voters to realize how their vote for McCain will actually be giving us a third Bush term in office. McCain is enthusiastically endorsed by Oregon Senator Gordon Smith, who joined him in his support of the War in Iraq and the Bush agenda.

To find out more what John McCain promises us if he is elected our President in November, click here.
As an additional public service, the DPO will email the McCain statement to thousands of Oregonians across the state. The DPO will encourage Democrats to forward the email on to their friends and family and to print it out and distribute copies throughout Oregon.
Democratic Party of Lane Co. Moves Office Space to Downtown Springfield

New DPLC Office: 826 A St. in Springfield
DPLC volunteers have moved our DPLC office from North Eugene to a new office space at 826 A St. in Springfield. The Executive Committee recently authorized the move and negotiated a multi-year lease.
The new office is in a very visible downtown location near the Post Office and the EMX transit line which runs from Eugene. The previous tenant was the Springfield Beacon.
With a total of 1,342 sq. ft., there are 7 rooms, wiring for high speed internet connectivity, and 8 phone lines. The largest room measures 11.5" x 26" and is perfect for holding committee meetings.
LTD's EmX operates from 6 am to 11 pm on weekdays. It takes about 16 minutes to travel from downtown Eugene to downtown Springfield. There is no charge to ride (see route map and schedule).
The DPLC could use the following donations
to be used in the new office! Can you help?
- VACUUM CLEANER
- SHREDDER
- COMPUTERS OR LAPTOPS
If you can donate an item, please call Sloan at 343-7166 to set up a delivery or pick-up time. |
Thanks to all our volunteers who helped find the space and organize the move! An Open House is being planned for shortly after the May 20th election.

Oregon Democrats will elect 65 delegates and 9 alternates
to the Democratic National Convention on August 25-28 in
Denver, Colorado. The number of delegates each presidential
candidate will receive is determined by the results of the May
20th Presidential Primary.
There are three different types of delegates
- District Delegates elect delegates to the state and
national conventions. They become district delegates
when they fill out the registration form.
- State Delegates are elected from their congressional
district conventions to serve at the state convention. State
delegates will elect delegates to the national convention.
- National Delegates are elected at the district or state
conventions to serve at the national convention. National
delegates also include the 12 automatic delegates.
The Oregon delegation must be equally balanced between
men and women. The representation goals are as follows: 7
Latino, 5 GLBT, 3 Asian, 2 African-American, 1 Native American.
The 4th Congressional District will elect 7 delegates and
1 alternate at the Congressional Convention on June 7th in Cottage Grove
to go to the National Convention and 61 delegates to go
to the State Convention. At the State Convention on June
21st, a total of 19 delegates and 4 alternates will be elected.
Twelve delegates and 4 alternates will be elected at-large.
Six delegates will be elected as Party Leader/Elected Official
(PLEO) delegates. One will be elected as an “unpledged addon”
delegate. Twelve delegates are automatic, unpledged,
delegates. They include our governor, U.S. Senator, 4 members
of the U.S. House, and the 6 elected and appointed members
of the Democratic National Committee.
The registration form is available on the
Democratic Party of Oregon website (www.dpo.org). The DPO
must receive your completed application by Thursday, May
22nd at 5 PM. Deliver it to the DPO at 232 NE 9th, Portland, OR
97232 or fax it to the DPO at (503) 224-5335.
The cost for each delegate to the National Convention
is approximately $1,500 which includes airfare, food, and
lodging. Delegates and alternates are responsible for their
own costs. There may be efforts to raise money for delegates
and alternates who cannot easily afford the trip.
The Democratic Party of Oregon will be holding how-to
sessions on running for delegate in many locations around
our state. The schedule will be posted on their website (www.
dpo.org).
