Lane County Sends Five Delegates
to the 2008 National Convention

Lane County Democrats made a strong showing at the State Convention in Monmouth and elected five more delegates to represent us at the DNCC Convention to be held in Denver in August. There were a total of 12 delegates at large and 6 PLEO delegates elected to represent both the Obama and Clinton campaigns determined by the results of the May 20th Presidential Primary. Former Oregon governor Barbara Roberts was chosen as the unpledged delegate.

John Cuff was one of only two male Obama delegates elected at large. Becky Gladstone and Susan Castillo will also be Obama delegates at large. Jared Mason-Gere was one of only two male PLEO Obama delegates elected. Mary Ann Holser will be a Clinton delegate at large.

The State Convention was held on Saturday, June 21st in Monmouth. Elected were 2 male and 5 female Obama delegates at large and 2 male and 2 female Obama PLEO delegates. Also elected were 2 male and 3 female Clinton delegates and 1 male and 1 female Clinton PLEO delegates.

The 4th Congressional District elected 7 delegates and 1 alternate at the Congressional Convention on Saturday, June 7th in Cottage Grove to go to the National Convention and 61 delegates to go to the State Convention. At the State Convention on June 21st, a total of 19 delegates and 4 alternates were elected, 5 of them come from Lane County.

Oregon Democrats will elect 65 delegates and 9 alternates to the Democratic National Convention on August 25-28 in Denver, Colorado. The number of delegates each presidential candidate will receive is determined by the results of the May 20th Presidential Primary.

There are three different types of delegates

1. District Delegates elect delegates to the state and national conventions.
2. State Delegates are elected from their congressional district conventions to serve at the state convention. State delegates will elect delegates to the national convention.
3. National Delegates are elected at the district or state conventions to serve at the national convention. National delegates also include the 12 automatic delegates.
